Super Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel sometimes referred to as 1.4410 or UNS S32750. is a premium alloy known for its exceptional strength and corrosion resistance. It is a member of the Duplex family of stainless steels, combining the best properties of both Ferritic and Austenitic stainless steels.

Introduction to Super Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel

Material Composition: 2507 stainless steel is composed of higher percentages of alloying elements compared to standard Duplex grades, including approximately 25% chromium, 4% to 6% molybdenum, 7% nickel, and 0.2% nitrogen. The increased content of these alloying elements, particularly molybdenum and nitrogen, significantly enhances its corrosion resistance.

Characteristics: Super Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel exhibits high Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) values, indicating its high resistance to localized corrosion, such as pitting and crevice corrosion.

Applications: Due to its superior performance characteristics, 2507 is chosen for applications in the chemical processing industry, marine environments, desalination plants, pulp and paper production, offshore oil and gas, and high-pressure pumps in the aluminum industry.

Strength: It offers approximately double the yield strength of standard 316 Austenitic stainless steel, providing advantages for demanding structural applications.

Corrosion Resistance: The increased molybdenum and nitrogen content in 2507 stainless steel provide a high level of corrosion resistance, especially in chloride-containing environments and sulfuric, phosphoric, and marine acids.

Heat Treatment: To maintain the phase balance and mechanical properties, solution annealing is used as the typical heat treatment process.

Forming and Machining: 2507 is more difficult to form and machine compared to standard stainless steels due to its higher strength. Specialized techniques and considerations are necessary for welding, forming, and cutting operations.

Welding: It is essential to use low heat input and post-weld heat treatment to avoid the risk of embrittlement or phase segregation that can occur in Super Duplex stainless steels.

Precipitation Hardening: Despite its high strength, 2507 stainless steel is not subject to precipitation hardening because of the metastable austenite present in the microstructure.

Standards: Produced in compliance with international standards, such as ASTM A240. ASTM A276. and comparable specifications that define chemical composition and mechanical properties.
